Librarians' work from mundane to special to extraordinary.

What job would you rather do?

This is the title of the quiz that I recently took in Facebook. (Facebook as you may all know is an online social networking site. The Unrated Quiz(zes) is one of the Applications in that site.) I had fun doing it because the ‘job’ listed that you have to choose from includes a stripper, pole dancer, lap dancer, prostitute and even pornstar to name a few -- all for the fun of it I would say.

What job would I rather do
?
I am a librarian and proud to be one. Like other librarians I hope to effect change and contribute to the profession either by sharing the insights and practical experiences that I have gained through the years of practice or by simply being the best librarian that I can be. Being in the field for almost five years, I came to realize early on that it’s not a walk in the park. Organizing and classifying books collection, selection and acquisition of library materials, services to patrons and even formulating and implementing policies – all of these and a whole lot more requires knowledge and expertise to be done accurately and effectively. You will need to update yourself on the trend and be aware of best practices.

There are times that I find the work stressful. Telling patrons to keep quiet and follow library rules every so often for one. Internet doesn’t work and the student needs to download an important document is a major ‘catastrophe’ and needs immediate attention. But when I see a student walk out the door who was able to get the book he ‘badly’ needs for her coursework; a faculty who says the library is her “favorite place” in the campus; or another professor who finds joy in finding out that there are many resources for his classes – I beam with pride. I find satisfaction being able to provide the library patrons with what they need. At the end of the day that’s what librarianship is all about – CUSTOMER DELIGHT.
So, would I rather do something else? Nah... I just want to do what I have been doing. Being a librarian. And while I’m at it, I’ll always put my best foot forward.
